Our Problem: |
|
Our problem is the amount of plastic bags used in grocery stores and farmers markets that get used once and then get thrown away
Why we shouldn’t use plastic bags100,000 marine animals are killed by plastic bags annually, and at least 267 different types of animals have been affected by plastic bags in the ocean. It takes 500 hundred or more years for a plastic bag to degrade in a landfill. Unfortunately the bags don't decompose completely but instead they photo-degrade, becoming micro-plastics that absorb toxins and continue to pollute the environment. https://www.biologicaldiversity.org/programs/population_and_sustainability/sustainability/plastic_bag_facts.html

Facts about the usage of plastic bagsEach year an estimated 500 billion to 1 trillion plastic bags are used world wide, meaning 1 million plastic bags are used per minute. Billions of plastic bags end up as litter each year. One person uses a plastic bag on average for 12 minutes, and we only recycle 1 plastic bag for every 200 we use. https://conservingnow.com/plastic-bag-consumption-facts/

Facts about plastic in the oceanIn 1 year 5 trillion plastic bags are produced. Plastic bags can encircle the world 7 times. There is a landfill in the Pacific, which is floating, That is twice the size of Texas, and its mostly made of plastic. In the North Pacific Ocean there is 6x time more plastic debris then plankton.

How plastic ends up in the ocean
Plastic bags ends up in the ocean for many reasons. Including that they are very lightweight,
and if we throw them away correctly they could just fly away with the wind. If we where to put them in a trash can, landfill or garbage truck they could escape easily and pollute environment then they would end up in the ocean. https://www.theworldcounts.com/stories/interesting-facts-about-plastic-bags |
Facts about why you shouldn't use plastic bagsYou shouldn't use plastic bags because they are expensive to by every market trip, they create litter, and they harm animals. One reason you shouldn't use plastic bags is becuse they are expensive. Plastic bags used to be free but now they may cost money (they cost 10 cents) , if you where to buy a reusable grocery bag they can be as cheap as 1 dollar. So if you where to get the 1 dollar bag and use it 10 times it would be the same price as buying 10 plastic bags that you use for a avarage of 12 minutes. Another reason you shouldn't use plastic bags is because, they create litter. After plastic bags turn into litter they create pollution and they may end up in the ocean harming all the see life. The last reason you shouldn't use plastic bags is becuse they harm animals. Since plastic bags are light they can easily fly into the ocean or any other habitats of animals. The animals living in those habitats may eat the plastic bags then choke on the plastic and die, then there Caracas will decompose letting the plastic bag free then it will fly to another animals habitat waiting for them to do the same.

What you should use instead of plastic bagsinstead of using plastic bags you should use reusable bags. One plastic bag cost 10 cents and 1 reusable bag can be as cheap as one dollar. So if you use the reusable bag 10 times it cost the same amount as buying 10 plastic bags that you use for an average of 12 minutes. So you should use reusable bags. There are many different types of eggs, for example cloth bags, mesh bags, and corn bags. These bags all cost different amounts and all are different for the environment, but they still are better for the environment. That’s why you should use non-plastic bags.
